Located
on the crest of the Palani hills, in the southernmost state of
Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal is an idyllic getaway for tourists,
trekkers and hill lovers. A star shaped lake dominates the scenic
wonders of this picturesque hill station. The hills were inhabited
by the Paliyans, before being discovered by American Missionaries
in 1845. Relics and artifacts of the Paliyan can still be seen in
the Shenbaganur Museum.
The serendipity of the beautiful lake surrounded by the wooden
slopes and mighty rocks, embellished with silvery waterfalls, all
conjoin to enhance the mesmerizing experience that one discovers
in Kodaikanal.
Some of the major tourist attractions in Kodaikanal include the
following.
Berijam Lake - A beautiful picnic spot located
21 kms from the Kodaikanal bus stand; this lake provides drinking
water to the Periakalam town. The scenery here delights the senses
and enthralls the brain and heart alike with its captivating
splendor.
Shenbaganur Museum - Maintained by the Sacred
Heart College, it has one of the best orchidoriums in the Country
with large variety of orchids and an amazing collection of birds.
Coaker's Walk - Coaker's Walk derives the name
from Lt. Coaker, who prepared the map of Kodaikanal. Situated only
about a kilometre from the lake it runs along a steep slope on the
southern side of the Kodaikanal. Some of the best views of the
plains can be seen from here.
Boat Club - Boats can be hired by tourists at
this boat club for a fascinating glide across the lake, affording
a full view of the surrounding beauty enveloped by the green
hills.
Location
It is located at a height of 2133 metres in the Palani hills,
which are an offshoot of the Western Ghats along the west coast of
Peninsular India. Kodaikanal lies in the state of Tamil Nadu in
the region bordering Kerala.
